2000/08/11

日本人は、みんな寂しがりやさんだ。
友達が欲しくて、やっと見つけた友達を続けるために、だらだらと時間を潰している。

Japanese people cannot live alone and always want to be with others.
they are afraid of losing relationships with other people
and spend their invaluable time just for keeping their friends.

日本人は、みんな友達を欲しがっている。
でもね。

Japanese people are eager to find somebody to talk with, to spend time with.
but they don't mind what they are talking about.
because they want others in order not to feel lonely themselves.

友達は、自分で欲しがるものじゃないんだよ。
向こうから、泣いてすがって、友達にして欲しいと言ってくるものなんだよ。

You cannot find friends as a result of your endeavour to find friends.
Friends will come to you en masse if they think you are worth being friends with.

もちろんそんな友達は、役に立たないけどね。

A little problem is that those people are perhaps not worth spending time together with.

　

2000/08/19

いま、ヤフーの掲示板に発言する時、日本語と英語をいっしょに書いている。
まあ、必ずしも、おなじことを言ってるわけじゃなくて、書く時の気分ですこしズレがあったりする。

These three or four days, I write messages on Yahoo Japan's message boards in both Japanese and English.
Of course I don't write the same thing in both languages.
because when you write in English your feeling becoms a little bit diffrent from when you write in Japanese.

で、もちろん、考えた通りに英語を書いて、手を入れたり、修正したり、辞書を引いたりせずに、そのまま出しちゃうから、間違いもある。

I write English in a natural speed as I think and feel.
I don't revise or improve the sentences, nor do I look into the dictionary.
so there are some misitakes in them.

でも、英語を道具として考えるなら、しゃべるように書かなきゃ駄目だと思うんだ。
しゃべったものは、あとで修正が効かない。

but if you regard English as a tool, you have to write just like you speak.
because what you said cannot be changed after you spoke.

いちいち、書いたものに手を入れていくと、英語を道具として使いこなせない。
「英作文」になってしまう。

If you try to make the sentences more intelligent more beautiful,
the type of English becomes "English Composition" not a tool.

そういう英文としてはちょっとレベルの落ちる文章を書くと、必ず文句が出てくる。
でも、日本語で文句を付けてくるんだよ。

and when I write that type of unpolished English, there always come up the persons who make some claims that my English is not good.
the problem is that those people write so only in Japanese, not in English.

that's the reason they cannot speak English at all.

僕がすごいのは、日本人で英語が出来るやつはいない、と知ってるところなんだ。

I know that there are no Japanese that can speak English really fluently.
that is my strong point and where I am different from others.

　

2000/09/01

今年の初めに、アメリカの観光ビザが切れてしまった。
ビザがないと、パイロットプログラムを使わなければならず、アメリカ入国の時に、出国切符を持っていなければならない。

At the beginning of this year, a tourist visa to the States in my passport expired.

Without a tourist visa, I have to enter the country with the visa waiver pilot program and accordingly I have to hold an exit air ticket(a ticket that enables me to leave the USA).

ということは、今までやっていたように、ＬＡで日本への往復切符を購入して、日本へ戻って、残りの片道切符で、思い付いたその日にアメリカへ飛ぶ、などという気楽なことが出来ない。

It means that I cannot travel with ease as I did.
I used to purchase a round-trip ticket in Los Angeles.
I flew to Japan and jumped in an airlpane when I felt like flying back to LA with the ticket.

また、もちろん、９０日以上の長期滞在も出来ない。
とても不便だ。

Of course, I cannot stay longer than 90 days in the States.
It's very inconvenient.

それで、ビザを取りに、近くのアメリカ大使館へ歩いてみた。

So I walked to the American Embassy to get a visa.

正門のところに、ビザ申請書（OF-156）が置いてある。
それといっしょに、「非移民ビザ申請方法」「OF-156」の記入に際して多くよせられる質問」という二つの紙をもらう。

I found OF-156 forms in a box attached to the fence at American Embassy main entrance.
and I got two other papers called "FAQs for OF-156"and "NONIMMIGRANT VISA APPLICATION PROCEDURES".

ビザが必要な理由を書いて、カバリングレターを付けて、返送用封筒を付けて、提出したら、９日でアメリカの観光ビザ(B-1/B-2)が送られてきた。

I wrote a letter explaining the reason I needed a tourist visa and posted the documents with a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage in the box.

Then 9 days later, I got the B-1/B-2 visa.

最近、ビザ申請手続き料金が４５ドルかかるようになった。
だから、取り易くなったような気がするよ。

Recently $45 is charged for the service.
I feel it has become a little bit more easier to get a tourist visa now than before.
